Give yourself a chance to reset with a relaxation massage.
What is Relaxation Massage?
Relaxation style massage is a gentle to medium pressure that aids with relaxation and tension relief. It does this by helping to calm the mind and balance the nervous system.
Similar to other forms of massage, it involves manual hands-on movements and manipulation of the soft tissue and muscles in the body to relieve tense muscles and de-stress the mind.
According to the FHT: “Massage involves working the soft tissue of the body, to ease day-to-day stresses and muscular tension, and promote relaxation. (Body massage, n.d.).
Relaxation or Swedish massage (classic) is regarded as the most common form of massage globally. It was developed in the 1830s by a Swedish fencing instructor and is considered the most well-known form of massage in the world.
How it works
Muscles that have become tight and tense can be relieved by applying pressure to the area. Different techniques including: stroking and kneading can be used which elicits a positive physiological response in many of the body’s systems such as the circulatory, nervous, musculoskeletal and digestive system.
“In Europe, when we talk about a (relaxation) “classic” massage we mean a Swedish massage. Classic massage involves directly massaging the skin and muscles in the affected area. Five different hand movements are used –stroking, kneading, rubbing, tapping and vibrating.
“The basic idea behind this approach is that pain is often caused by tense and tight muscles that affect blood circulation and irritate the nerves. The aim of classic massage is to relax the muscles and improve circulation by directly treating these problems.”(InformedHealth.org, 2020).
Benefits of Relaxation Massage
Relaxation massage has many benefits that can help manage a host of health conditions and enhance wellness. These include, but are not limited to: improving circulation, improving skin tone, increasing flexibility, lowering stress levels and reducing pain and tension.
The FHT explains: “It [massage] helps to increase delivery of blood and oxygen to the treated areas and can also be used in support of other therapies to assist in the rehabilitation of muscular injuries.” (Body massage, n.d.).
