Reiki hits the headlines but what is it?

Updated: Oct 26, 2022

Reiki has been in the spotlight recently following reports, from newspapers and magazines, that Meghan Markle uses the therapy. It looks like the media attention has piqued your interest too, with more and more people asking me to explain the treatment - so here’s the lowdown on this alternative therapy, which might sound “new age” but has in fact been around for centuries.

The word Reiki is Japanese for universal life energy and describes a system of natural healing. It was founded by Mikao Usui in the early 20th century and is considered a form of energy healing. There are many forms of Reiki but here at Holistic - Health Matters we use the Usui healing system.

The treatment is fully clothed and involves the placing of hands on or above the body in various sequences to help balance the body’s energy flow.

How does it help?

Reiki is a calming, relaxing therapy that has many benefits and can assist with almost anything. When you have a treatment, the practitioner is merely a conduit for the Reiki energy or universal life force. The energy flows from the practitioner’s hands to the client and works holistically, addressing the body, mind and spirit.

According to the UK Reiki Federation: “Reiki encourages and supports positive personal choices, such as improving diet, taking more exercise, devoting time for rest or leisure activities, and may reduce the need for alcohol and tobacco. Creating greater inner harmony and balance, regular Reiki treatments promote a calmer response to life’s challenges.

“Reiki’s gentle energy is easily adapted to most medical conditions and may be used safely by people of all ages, including pregnant mothers, new-borns, surgical patients, the frail and the elderly, in any situation.

“Being complementary, Reiki works effectively alongside orthodox healthcare and natural remedies, expanding treatment options.”

What else should you know?

1. There are many different types of Reiki, including Angelic, Karuna and Rainbow Reiki, to mention only a few, all of which are an adaptation of Usui Reiki.

2. There are five reiki principles. Just for today...

Do not worry

Do not anger

Work with diligence

Be grateful

Be kind to others

3. Plants and animals love Reiki too.

4. Reiki will always flow to where it needs to go.

5. Reiki can be sent from a distance and is just as powerful as an in-person session.
