What is Reiki?
Reiki is a therapy that makes use of the energy surrounding us. The Cambridge Dictionary describes it as: “a treatment that involves directing energy from your hands into someone’s body to make them feel better.” (reiki, n.d.)
History of Reiki
Reiki is an alternative therapy that has been around for centuries. It is thought to have been used in ancient Tibet but its presence is well known in almost every culture and religion in the world. According to the website Blissful Moments Holistics: “ The Japanese call it ‘Ki’, the Chinese call it ‘Chi’, Christians call it ‘Holy Ghost’ and Hindus call it ‘Prana’. The energy is the same; however, it’s application and theory in each culture differ greatly.”

The website continues by explaining that the traditional form of Reiki was introduced by a Japanese man called Mikao Usui (Fig. 1) in the nineteen hundreds. He had an intense spiritual event which lead to the creation of Usui Reiki. It is thought he gained a healing skill, which he named Reiki, after a 21 day mediation and this discovery lead to the development of Reiki in the West. (Lynda, 2019).
How it works
In the article, What is Reiki and Does it Really Work, it explains that when you have a treatment, the practitioner is merely a conduit for the Reiki energy. The energy flows from the practitioner’s hands to the client and works holistically addressing body, mind & soul. It says: “Reiki practitioners act as a conduit between you and the source of the universal life force energy. The energy flows through the practitioner’s hands to you…Reiki aids in healing by helping people become balanced – physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.”
It further explains that the treatment is fully clothed and involves the placing of hands on or above the body in various sequences ( Fig. 2) to help balance the body’s energy flow. “During a session, you’ll lie on a massage table fully clothed, as your reiki practitioner gently places their hands, palms down, on or just above your body in specific energy locations. They use a series of 12 to 15 different hand positions.” (Bodner, 2021)

Benefits of Reiki
Reiki is safe to use on anyone and can be modified for almost any ailment. It is particularly beneficial for issues connected with mental health such as stress and anxiety and is considered a calming and relaxing therapy with endless benefits. According to the UK Reiki Federation: “Reiki encourages and supports positive personal choices, such as improving diet, taking more exercise, devoting time for rest or leisure activities, and may reduce the need for alcohol and tobacco. Creating greater inner harmony and balance, regular Reiki treatments promote a calmer response to life’s challenges. Reiki’s gentle energy is easily adapted to most medical conditions and may be used safely by people of all ages, including pregnant mothers, new-borns, surgical patients, the frail and the elderly, in any situation.” (Reiki for you, n.d).
There are many forms of Reiki but here at Holistic - Health Matters we use the Usui healing system. We may also incorporate the use of crystals, sound healing and pendulum work to help amplify the treatment and detect blockages.
